Dogs of Dreamtime May 8, 2009 I loved this book! It is an engaging, spiritual journey of finding herself with the help of her dear friends, her dogs. It was hard to put this one down.
SHAMANIC JOURNEY (WITH DOGS!)--WOW May 1, 2009 I brought this book along on my beach vacation and I'm glad I did. As a shamanic dreamer and a dog lover, this book captured my heart and my imagination completely. I highly recommend anyone who loved this book to also check out "Conscious Dreaming" by Robert Moss to learn how to relate dreams to your waking life the way Shanley did here. By paying attention to her dreams, Shanley was able to connect to her beloved Kiera in a much deeper way than she would have otherwise. Whether one believes in reincarnation or not, the story is a useful tool to put one in touch with their own feelings about loss or grief. Katy http://fengshuibyfishgirl.com
A Compellingly Powerful Tale That Will Change You January 7, 2009 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a beautifully-written book that covers unique ground in the dog-human relationship arena. I fell in love with it, and, as other readers have mentioned, I found I couldn't put it down.
Karen, like Dorothy, gets swept up in a tornado that dumps her on Oz. She has to make a difficult journey through a strange land, in hopes of finding the wizard with all the answers. But there is no wizard. There are only her dogs, and it is they who finally help show her the way home.
One cannot help but admire the deep love and commitment Karen has for her animals and her family. No doubt the world would be a better place if there were more people like her in it.
So why three stars? Because I'd like to issue a reader-alert. Two, actually.
While there is no shortage of belly laughs here for sure, this book should come with two warnings: First, a tissue alert! I don't care if you're a man or a woman, you won't get through this book without a box of Kleenex. And, second, you won't be able to put it down either once you start, so before you open the covers, clear your calendar and plan on reading through the night.
Now that I've performed my civic duty, I'm off to get all my dogs vaccinated for Lyme Disease.
Good Dog Book - bit wordy October 21, 2008 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Excellent book for people who love dogs, at times the writing is a bit wordy and overly detailed, but still information and experiencing the emotional side of owning dogs can be gleamed from it as seen and felt from the author's point of view.
The Hero's Journey June 10, 2008 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
In many ways, this is the classic tale of the hero's journey. Shanley starts out in the ordinary world minding her own business. Until she has a dream that draws her into something much larger; a dream that will set off a chain-reaction of events that will challenge what Shanley knows about her dogs, and ultimately what she knows about herself.
Shanley's love for her dogs drives her to continue the search until she finds the answers and the knowledge she needs to transform both herself and her dogs. Throughout the process, she demonstrates an inspiring degree of courage, grit, and determination. As with the mythical hero, Shanley returns home from her journey with a gift that she shares with the rest of us -- her hard-won lessons learned.
I loved this book. The writing is beautiful, the story is moving, and both humans and animals are memorable. And if I were to come back in my next life as a dog, I know in whose dreams I'd want to appear.
Karen Shanley, I hope you're hard at work on your next book. In eager anticipation....
